Milestones: She can hear my heartbeat.  Her skin is less see-through.  She knows which way is up and which way is down.  She can grasp her legs with her hands.  She can open her eyes!  She has eyelashes.  Her immune system is growing, and she's taking breaths.

I'm 60% of the way there.  It's crazy to think about all that's happened while I've been pregnant - moving to a different state, living in a new apartment, Robert starting a new job.  Wow!  We've picked a name, but we've made a vow of secrecy.  Also had the realization today that I've been pregnant for half a year.  The third trimester is just around the corner!

Third Annual Girls Weekend

This weekend was our third annual girls trip with my in-laws.  Due to my current state, we decided to keep the trip more local, and we spent Saturday-Monday in Kansas City.  On the way there, I split my drive into two sections and drove an hour on Friday to stay the night with my parents.  Aunt Pam was in town, and we all enjoyed a family dinner together.  I hit the road Saturday morning after breakfast and made it to Serina's house at 11:00.  Grandma June had driven in the day before, so the three of us hopped in Serina's car and drove over to pick up Bethany.  We started out the trip with breakfast at Mi Ranchito.  In honor of Robert, I got his favorite dish: cream cheese enchilada.  It was very good!

After lunch we went to Johnson County Community College to take an art class.  It was free class day at the college.  We took a quick tour of a couple of the exhibits at the art museum, and then we made nature sculptures of our own with some modeling clay.  I made a dad turtle and a baby turtle in honor of Robert and baby and his love for turtles.  Unfortunately, Mittens also has a love for turtles and she tore off the feet and eyes last night.

Next up: manicures and pedicures.  Bethany and I even got cute little flowers painting on our big toes.  After that, we shopped at The Plaza for just a bit and hit up a couple of stores there.  That was followed by dinner at my choice of Jack Stack.  Serina and I split the sampler.  I failed to get a picture of the meal, but I'd say the after picture is a good indication that it was delicious.

We finished off the day by checking into the Hampton Inn and watching some Food Network.  On Sunday morning we had breakfast at IHOP and started our day of shopping with a trip to Nebraska Furniture Mart.

Anybody want to spare $3,500 for a massage chair?
We spent the majority of the day at The Legends Outlet.  I had never been there before, but there were so many stores and great deals.  My goal was to get Robert some new dress shirts for work, and I managed to come home with five of them.  Shopping was tiring, so we needed some dessert and an afternoon nap in order to get charged up for more shopping.

We watched the new Cinderella on Sunday night, and it was very cute.  We wrapped up on Monday with breakfast at Cracker Barrel, a trip to JCPenney and Hobby Lobby, and lunch at Blue Koi.  I had success at Hobby Lobby.  For about three months now I had been trying to find six picture frames for some canvases that friends painted for us.  Since the canvases are thicker than photos it's been kind of difficult, but I finally found six matching frames, and they were even 50% off!  My drive home was much easier than my drive to KC.  On the way to KC it rained very hard for all but about 10 minutes of the drive.  The drive back home took about three hours, and it was sunny and pretty outside other than quite a bit of wind.  I only stopped once for a gas/bathroom break.  I needed to get home in time to go to one of our student's track meets and Robert's softball game.  South Gate won big time!  Robert managed to get on base every time he was up, scored a couple of times, and even got out a couple of people at second base.  Maybe having our own Gator mascot helped.

Weekend in Texas

Robert and I had the opportunity to attend Youth Ministry Lab at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary this weekend.  It was great!  We left on Thursday and were able to spend the night with my aunt, uncle, and cousin outside of Dallas.  I had visited them there once at Thanksgiving a few years ago, but Robert had never been.  They welcomed us with a delicious dinner of smoked ribs which is always okay in Robert's book.  After that, we spent some time chatting, demoing my cousin's virtual reality simulator, and watching a movie called Bernie.  On Friday morning we explored downtown and finished up our time with Aunt Dana with some delicious burgers and pie.

We drove about an hour and a half to get to the seminary and got checked in.  We had some time before the conference actually started so we did some exploring.  It was definitely bigger than Southeastern, and it made us miss our time at seminary.

We walked around campus and drove around a bit.  We found the duplexes where my parents lived when Dad went to Southwestern.

We ventured off campus and found Robert's first house.  He lived there until he was about four years old.

We got checked into our hotel and were pleasantly surprised at how nice it was.  La Quinta served us well!

The first two sessions were with JD Greear of The Summit.  We thought it was funny that we had to travel to Texas to hear a popular pastor from North Carolina.  We never did meet him when we lived there, but we made sure to introduce ourselves at the conference.  He spoke about the assurance of salvation, and we enjoyed listening to him.

Next up was Gary Thomas, author of Sacred Marriage.  We've been fans of Thomas for a few years.  We went through his book during our premarital counseling and again in our Sunday School class in NC.  He's such a mesmerizing speaker, and he brings great insights.  We heard him speak twice - Friday night and Saturday morning.  The funniest thing he said was, "You can't possibly expect to keep your spouse infatuated for six decades.  Nobody is that interested!"  Ha!  He said this in regard to the need to focus on God's Kingdom in order to have a long-lasting marriage.  If we are both more focused on God's Kingdom and loving each other well more than being loved, then we will have a God-honoring marriage and be loved well in the process.  It made me want to read more of his books!  That and the fact that we found out he's a Duke fan.

We got back to the hotel on Friday night and enjoyed having cable TV for a bit.  The next morning we had a tasty breakfast at the hotel.

Like I said, we heard Gary speak again on Saturday morning.  We also heard Johnny Derouen speak on having open doors for youth ministry and how to attract students.  He spoke about the extreme importance of prayer and asking the Holy Spirit to bring in students.

We enjoyed lunch at Joe T. Garcia's, and Robert especially loved his fajitas.  After lunch, we hung out at the pool.  The pool wasn't heated, but Robert still hopped in.  I stuck with dipping my fit in the hot tub.

Robert had the idea to see a Rangers game, and we enjoyed watching them play the Astros.  We had seats on the absolute back row, but on the plus side, nobody can kick your chair when nobody is sitting behind you.  The weather was perfect for a game!

The Gingerbread Man made an appearance.
On Sunday, we went to The Village Church in hopes to hear Matt Chandler preach.  Unfortunately, he didn't preach, but the guest speaker did a very good job, and we still got to meet Matt after the service.  After church, we started the journey back home.  Thankfully, the hour drive from the hotel to church put us an hour closer to home, so the trip was broken up a bit.  We had lunch at Whataburger (my first time), and made it home safely.  Robert was awesome and drove the whole time.  I was able to crochet and read magazines.  I was also the DJ in charge of the iPod.  It's weird to think that this is one of the last road trips with just the two of us (Alabama in May).  When we got home, I made sure to crack out my souvenir: some peach salsa.

Sickness and Appointment #5

Robert and I consider ourselves to have pretty good immune systems.  We've known each other for more than five years, and neither of us has had the flu in that time, and we've each only had a cold or two (minus the time I had mono!).  However, in March Robert caught a cold and passed it to me.  It was no fun, but it was still just your standard cold.  I blame my cold on Robert and my weakened pregnant immune system.  I was feeling back to normal until last Wednesday night.  I got home from church and realized I had developed a sore throat and threw up twice through the night.  I just knew I'd wake up the next morning with a cold.  I was right - stuffy/leaking nose, cough, tired.  I had a super low-grade fever of 99.6.  I considered it to be fairly good timing because I had my fifth OBGYN appointment the next day and decided to just mention the cold while I was there.

The appointment went well.  Baby girl's heart rate has slowed down a bit and is now 150 bpm.  My blood pressure and pulse are good.  Everything was good.  I mentioned my cold, and the doctor wasn't concerned at all.  I checked out and made my next appointment.  That'll be the big kahuna: another ultrasound, appointment with the doctor, glucose test with blood work, and a TDAP vaccine.

I felt pretty much the same on Saturday and Sunday, but then on Monday I felt so much worse.  Robert said my cough was "scary" and actually jumped once when I coughed.  I didn't sleep well and woke up several times to blow my nose and hack up a lung.  I woke up with super gross gunk in my lashes and very red eyes.

About halfway through Monday my right ear got clogged up, I couldn't hear well, and it felt like my ear had a little knife in it.  I self-diagnosed myself with an ear infection, took Tylenol, put a hot pack on my head, and decided to call the doctor on Monday morning.  Apparently my OBGYN doesn't take sick patients, and I don't have a primary care physicians here since I've just been going to the OBGYN every four weeks, so to urgent care we went.  I made the remark to Robert that if you didn't come to urgent care with some sort of horrible illness you were bound to have one by the time you left.  Two people wore masks, one lady was laying on the chair with a pillow, and another person was wheeled in in a wheelchair.  Once I got to the exam room the doctor only needed about two minutes to diagnose me with an upper respiratory infection, ear infection, and ruptured ear drum.  While that was awful, it was nice to get a speedy diagnosis that coincided with what I suspected.  According to my mom, I had a ruptured ear drum when I was little as well.  Man, it's not fun.  Got a prescription for an antibiotic as well as ear drops, and within 24 hours I started feeling significantly better.

While I'm writing about illness, I have to tell you about Mittens' sickness.  I can't decide which is worse - being sick yourself or having your pet who can't speak be sick.  If you don't have pets or are a cat hater, feel free to stop reading here.  As a side note, if you are a cat hater, Mittens will convert you!  Anyway, last Sunday night I noticed Mittens going to her litter box every five minutes without success.  She'd hop in, try, kick around the litter, get out, and return five minutes later.  I knew something was wrong.  Then on Monday I realized it'd been 24 since she had a BM which is very unlike her.  I also realized that she'd thrown up a bit through the night.  She was crying a lot, and let me just tell you, this confirmed that her crying for food isn't nearly as desperate as I thought it was.  Her real "I'm in pain" crying was infinitely more pitiful.  Mittens slept on Roberts chest for more than two hours one of these nights which she's never done in her entire life.  We thought it was cute, but as I put two and two together I began to realize that she did this because she wasn't feeling well.  Of course, Robert took it as a sign that she finally likes him.  Doubtful. ;)

So sleepy!

We don't have a vet here locally yet, but I found a place online that was able to see her on Tuesday so we went for it.  The appointment was at 5:00, so we had to wait all day.  She was so lethargic and pitiful.  Sure, she always sleeps a lot, but her sleeping posture was different.  It was more like collapsing than snuggling in for a nap.  She didn't want to play or be brushed which is so uncharacteristic.  Thankfully, she was still eating and drinking normally.  We got her to the vet.  Putting her in her carrier and driving with her is basically the worst and traumatic for all.  The vet was very nice.  Mittens was in a cat-specific exam room.  She loves the high window with the big ledge.  It definitely made her feel safer while she got acclimated.  The vet handles her and examined her little body.  He confirmed that her colon felt good.  She ended up peeing on the exam table which was actually perfect because he just did a urine sample right there and was able to determine that she had a lower urinary tract infection with blood in her urine.  A kitty cat UTI.  How pitiful is that?  He said that the constipation was a side effect of the UTI.  He gave her an antibiotic shot in her upper back and gave her a prescription to relax her digestive system so everything could pass easier.  We had her trim her nails while he was at it.  He made it look so easy.

Scoping out the place

Anyway, Robert went out to the car with her while I paid.  When I got in the car Robert had felt bad for her and was letting her walk around the car instead of staying in her carrier.  I knew just how bad he felt for her because I've asked him before if we could do this and he said no.  Mittens loved it.  So much so that she wiggled herself under my chair and wouldn't come out.  When we got back to the townhouse Robert tried to pull her out by her collar, but now that she's lost one pound on her diet and we haven't adjusted her collar that stinking thing slid right off.  Thankfully, she came out very quickly after that, and it was the perfect time to wash and adjust her collar.  She was sleepy when we came home and lounged even more than usual for about two days.  I know that's because of the shot and pills.

Her new "spot."  I don't love that she sits on the table, but at least her blanky is on top of it, and it's better than her old spot of the back of the chair.

We were to give her a pill at each meal, and she took it so easily for the first two days.  After that, she started to feel better and stopped taking it.  The doctor said that was fine but to still just put one out in the food bowl at each meal until the prescription was empty.  She's so funny!  The princess can't just not eat it.  She has to flick it out of her food bowl as if to declare, "I can't have that in my presence!"

Finally sitting up again

So when we were at the vet on Tuesday he said to come back on Friday if her litter box habits still hadn't returned to normal.  On Thursday morning things hadn't improved so I called to set up the appointment for the next day.  Thank heavens, the needy thing surprised us Thursday and all was well.  She's doing so much better now.  It was awful.  I know she's "just a cat," but with a human you can explain how you feel and what hurts, but you just can't do that with your bed.  Robert said it was good preparation for a sick baby who can't speak yet.  I'd agree.
