Colorado Vacation

Robert, Sarah, and I got to go on a very fun vacation to Colorado last week to visit my Aunt Pam and Uncle Nelson.  Robert had a week of vacation to take, and we knew visiting them would be a great choice!  They were great hosts and treated us to a wonderful week full of laughs, good conversations, tasty food, new sights, and great memories.

Wednesday, November 30
Immediately after evening church we drove to Kansas City to spend the night with Robert's mom.  This was our first attempt of night driving with Sarah, and it went really well.  She pretty much slept the whole three hours.  When we got to KC Sarah woke up and played with Serina and snacked a bit for about an hour, but then she went back to sleep and still slept well, thankfully.  Sarah is becoming quite fond of Serina and Mark's dog, Moose, and has even learned how to say his name.  We enjoyed a hot breakfast in the morning and hit the road.

Thursday, December 1
This was our big driving day.  In theory, the drive should have been about nine hours.  With stops it ended up taking about 10.5 hours, but with the time change to Mountain Time, it was like 9.5 hours had elapsed.  I have to give extreme thanks to Robert.  He drove all but about an hour of this entire road trip.  I was working on a large computer project for our church's Christmas present adoption program, so I wasn't exactly slacking, but Robert did such a great job driving.  I started out in the front and moved to the back with Sarah after our first break.  This turned out to be her hardest leg of the trip.  Apparently, she didn't want me back there intruding on her personal time.  She kept pushing my arm away from her and didn't want me trying to play with her.  It actually turned out well for both of us because I was able to spend the rest of the trip up front working on my computer project, and Sarah was content to play be herself.  She's done plenty of big road trips, but this was her first one since she became mobile, so I had been kind of curious how it would go, but her attention span is also lengthening, and she really enjoyed playing with things for long spurts of time.  She read a Real Simple magazine for half and hour and colored with a pad of paper and pen for an hour and a half.  She napped twice for about an hour each.  The rest of the time she just did random stuff like playing with stuffed animals and her xylophone, having some quiet time, and snacking.

Peanut Butter and Jelly "hat"

We got to Pam and Nelson's house right at dinner time and enjoyed some supper and a tour of their beautiful house.  They had a great setup for us in their basement, and Sarah did so great having a real crib in her own bedroom  She had great nights' sleep the whole time, which really made the vacation enjoyable.  There's nothing worse than rough nights away from home to make a vacation stink!  After Sarah went to bed we enjoyed flipping through old scrapbooks and showing Robert some pictures he'd never seen.  Anybody else agree with me that Sarah looks a bit like me?

Friday, December 2
We started off our morning getting a quick tour of Colorado State University (didn't get out of the car) looking around in a cute bookstore and toy store downtown while Sarah napped in the car with Pam.  She's always extra cute when she's first waking up!

Next we hit up the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery.  It was so fun!  We loved the music section the most, and Sarah really stayed entertained for two hours.  It's a really cool place!

I think this is the afternoon that we went fabric shopping at JoAnn's.  We got fabric to make a Christmas tree skirt and a princess dress for Sarah.  Pam is such a creative person, and it's a lot of fun to work on projects with her!

We had dinner at Nordy's, and it was delicious!  Robert said he had the best buffalo wings of his life, and I really liked my grown up macaroni and cheese with pulled pork and fried jalapeno straws.  Sarah did really well!  She had one little meltdown, but otherwise she enjoyed looking at two elementary aged kids who were making faces at her, and she colored some with the crayons that were provided.

Saturday, December 3
Robert, Sarah, and I had never been to Wyoming, so when we realized that Pam and Nelson live less than an hour away we knew we wanted to make a day trip up there.  I'm glad that we went, and I'd say that three hours we spent there was enough. :)  We went to the Cheyenne Depot Museum, The Wrangler western store, and a little bakery.  It was a fun and very cold day.

Once we got back we joined back up with Pam and went to a little winter wonderland, and Sarah got to meet Mrs. Claus.  She also got to ride her first little grocery store horse, and it was a hit!

Sunday, December 4
We were able to go to Pam and Nelson's church and got a little tour of the student area.  The children sang a few special Christmas songs, and it was wild to imagine Sarah doing something like that in just a couple of years!

We took a little drive up the mountains after church and enjoyed the views.  I wish Sarah would wear a hat and gloves so she wouldn't get so cold.  Maybe next year?

Pam and Nelson graciously watched Sarah for a few hours so we could go out.  We got coffee and pedicures.  Yes, that's right!  It was so relaxing and nice to just chat.  Sarah helped Pam cook baked ziti for dinner, and it was delicious!  Sarah ate a lot, and we did too.

Sarah enjoyed some glue stick work and lots of stickers.  She used to only want to put stickers on herself and other people because she could pull them off and re-stick them, but this was her first time to be okay with putting them on paper and leaving them.  She's growing up!  :)

Monday, December 5
We hit the road right after breakfast and drove, drove, drove.  We contacted Robert's grandparents and were able to meet up with them for dinner at The Cozy Inn which is a family favorite.  We got back to Kansas City around 8:00 and spent the night with Mark and Serina again.  Sarah enjoyed playing with some of Robert's old Hot Wheels and reptile toys.

Tuesday, December 6
We were able to see Robert's sister, her husband, and their six week old daughter, Sadie.  Sarah enjoyed Sadie and quickly moved to Aunt Bethany's bagel. :)  It's incredible to see the difference between a 6 week old and 16 month old.  Hard to believe that was Sarah 15 months ago!

We made another stop in Bolivar to see my parents and Memaw and Pepaw, and then we finally got back to our house around 6:00.  We had such a great trip and came back feeling refreshed.

To the stay at home mom

Let me start out by saying that this post is geared toward stay at home moms simply because that's what I am, so after staying at home during my pregnancy and all of Sarah's life for a total of 22 months so far, I feel like I have some decent insights into being a stay at home mom that could maybe lift your spirits as a fellow stay at home more or at least get a head nod and an "Mmhmm.  Preach it."

It's okay to take a nap.  Seriously.  I'm tired if hearing moms say that they don't have time to nap or feel guilty about napping.  Let's just estimate that you're baby is awake from 7:00am-7:00pm and naps for a total of two hours a day.  That means she's awake for 10 hours a day, 7 days a week.  That means that you're spending 70 hours a week meeting your baby's needs.  That's just shy of two full-time jobs.  You don't get a breakfast break; you drink room temp coffee an hour later.  You don't get a lunch break because you feed your baby and then heat up some leftovers.  You don't even get to go to the bathroom in privacy.  Seriously, you deserve a stinking nap when your babe takes a nap.  Sure, your husband will be extra happy if he's able to make it to the kitchen table without breaking his leg maneuvering through a pile of toys and laundry, but you'll find 10 minutes during the day to pick up really quick before he gets home.  Take a nap, take a nap, take a nap!  Okay, so maybe you aren't a napper.  Read a book, watch tv, crochet, or whatever helps you reset to make it through the rest of the day.

You might feel like because you're not out there interacting with dozens of people a day at work that you've kind of been forgotten.  Honestly, people probably aren't thinking about what you're doing all day, and that stings from time to time.  Sometimes you'll hear people say, "I wish I could stay at home," and you'll feel guilty about not loving every second of it.  It's okay to not feel like shaking a rattle and singing The Wheels on the Bus is the mentally stimulating thing you've ever done.  You'll feel like you aren't making an impact on the world or the Kingdom because you literally build block towers and spoon-feed squash to a nonverbal baby all day. But, and this is something I have to remind myself of regularly, you are building the foundation for a loving, trusting relationship with your child.  Right now she already knows that she can trust you to keep her safe, feed her when she's hungry, help her stay rested, and introduce her to new and fun things.  By God's grace, one day she will trust you to hear her and know her when she shares about her first crush, a friendship where she feels misunderstand, homework struggles, and her hopes and dreams for the future.  When you feel like you could be out there being a missionary and bringing hundreds to Christ through a crusade, remember that you have 70 hours a week to be Jesus to your little one.  For now, it might look like reading a four sentence version of the creation story and saying things like, "What a soft kitty.  I'm glad God made animals.  Thank you, God, for making animals and for making me," and that seems super basic, but I hold fast to the hope that one day Sarah will ask Jesus to forgive her of her sins and will become a born again believer.  Seriously, that will make every time I sang "Jesus Loves Me" over and over again worth it.  My number one priority as a parent is to shepherd my child toward a personal relationship with Christ, and I'm so thankful that I have the honor and privilege to be her primary influence.

Some days will be really quiet, but God is still with you.  Some days you'll look at the calendar and realize that you seriously have absolutely nothing to do and it's only 9:00am.  You don't want to muster up the energy to go grocery shopping, it's raining so you can't go on a stroller ride, you friend's son is sick so you can't have a play date, everyone else is at work so they  can't come by or talk on the phone, and the day will seem super quiet, but God hears every thought, and you can talk to him in your head or aloud.  Don't worry, your baby won't think you're crazy!  You can also narrate everything you're doing.  You'd be amazed at how therapeutic it can be to say, "Mommy is losing her mind right now.  She sure hopes you take a very long nap so she can eat a brownie and watch TV."  I suppose one day she'll be old enough to understand that.  :)

The other day I knew that Robert had an extra meeting in the evening and would be gone from about 8:30am-7:30pm.  Around noon I was feeling down that I still had more than seven hours until he'd be home, and I literally had to have a complete mindset shift and say, "I'm not going there."  I told myself I wouldn't have a pity party.  I know Robert doesn't want to work late.  He'd rather be at home.  I know that he has to work outside of the home so that I can stay at home.  When I can think reasonably like this it makes a world of difference.  Of course, this doesn't always happen, and sometimes I lay in bed and cry for a minute when Sarah wakes up after a short 30 minute nap.  That's real life for you.

But other days God will send you an angel of a friend who comes to play with your baby, and you eat dinner together, go grocery shopping together, and then watch Grey's Anatomy and bake cookies after your baby goes to sleep.  God is so sweet to me, and I know he'll give you some sweet forever friends, too, even when it seems like all of your other friends work, go to school, or just have so many other things going on, and you're at home just changing diapers on repeat.  And maybe when you start working outside of the home one day you'll make a younger stay at home mom friend and the memories will come flooding in and you'll take that mom a coffee, and you'll be her angel of a friend for the day.

Sarah At 15 Months

I've slowed down on the Sarah updates and haven't done one since she turned one, so it's high time, huh?  We just had her 15 month appointment, and she's grown an inch, has lost 3oz, and her head hasn't grown at all.  30 3/4" tall (55%), 22lbs 13.5oz (68%), and 17 5/8" (25%) head circumference.  She's still wearing 12-18 month and 18-24 month clothes.  I feel like the waist and torso fit well on the 18-24 month clothes, but the sleeves and pants are usually too long.  It's weird that she can still wear clothes that she was wearing in March.  Her body has definitely been focused on talking and walking and has come to a grinding halt in the height and weight department.

Sarah has a healthy appetite and will try most anything and enjoys a variety of foods.  Her favorites are still things like peanut butter, smoothies, bread, carrots, sweet potatoes, watermelon, milk, and peas.  But she likes random stuff like water chestnuts, spoonfuls of sour cream, and bamboo.  She eats three meals, two snacks, 2-3 thermoses of milk, and 1-2 thermoses of water.  The biggest news in the food department is that she drinks whole milk and ditched the bottle about a month ago.  YAY!!!!  No more bottle washing and drying rack.  One day it just clicked and she started loving her rubber straw thermos.

She is learning so many new physical things that her body can do.  She started walking on her own a week or two after her first birthday.  Now she can walk sideways, backwards, run, march, and dance.  She's learned how to climb onto her own little chair, step stool, rocking chair, and hearth (YIKES!).  She can't quite reach the couch yet, but I know it'll come soon enough.  She can stack three blocks on top of each other.  She also follows short commands like, "Go get the ball," or "Bring me the book."

She loves imaginary play.  We frequently feed book characters and stuffed animals crackers and sips of milk.  We like having tea parties together.  She loves combing my hair.  She is a neat freak and needs a napkin so she can wipe her own hands and tray after each meal.  She also likes wiping the floor, walls, bath tub, and anything else that she thinks needs to be cleaned - this has even included wood chips!

It seems like she learns a new word nearly every day.  She can repeat/mimic about 90 words, and I'd say she has at least 50 words that she says on her own regularly.  She's started putting two words together and saying short sentences like "Hi, DaDa!" "What's that?" "Oh no." "Night night." and "Hi, baby."  Some other favorite new words are push, wash, down, up, walk, rock, talk, horse, pumpkin, and kitty cat!

She's such a charmer and has learned how to smack her lips together for a kiss, blow a kiss, and catch a kiss.  She's become much more affectionate in the last month or two and frequently runs across the room just to give us a hug, hops up in our laps to read, give us a hug after every diaper change, and kisses things she loves like the rocking horse, stuffed animals, and books.  She is also obsessed with stickers and enjoys putting them on herself and others.  She can say sticker, sticky, and stuck.  She loves necklaces and can turn just about anything into a necklace.

Temper tantrums have started up, and in that category she's your typical toddler.  The first notable one happened when she fell and her graham cracker fell in half.  It was the end of the world.  The other most memorable one happened when she found out she could climb onto the fireplace hearth.  I got her off, got eye to eye to tell her it was unsafe, and swatted her hand.  She really wanted to get back on it, but she just looked and it and cried but clapped her hands for herself for being so obedient even though it was really difficult for her.  I was so proud!

Other notable events from the last three months include Halloween, a double ear infection, and meeting her first little cousin, Sadie.

A Day In The Life - Fall 2016

Robert and Amy are 26 years old, Sarah is 14 months, and Mittens is 4.5 years old!

Monday | October 10, 2016

4:41 am - Mittens starts meowing outside our door.  I get out of bed to feed her.  She's supposed to wait until 7:00, but Sarah hasn't been feeling well lately, and I don't want to risk Mittens waking her up.

7:22 am - Sarah wakes up, so it's time for us to get out of bed, too.  She's starving and has the world's heaviest wet diaper.  I hold her for a bit while Robert gets breakfast going.

7:40 am - I drink coffee, Sarah and I share a smoothie, and I eat some frozen waffles.  Our coffee has been tasting weird lately.  Do we need a new coffee maker?  Sarah begs for some pieces, and she gets it.  She seems pretty miserable.  She's had a cough and runny nose for over a week, but now she's also teething her top canines, so we give her some Orajel.

8:00 am - Sarah and I play on the couch while Robert gets ready for the day.  She wipes lots of smoothie and snot on me.  Thanks, Sarah.

8:15 am - Sarah's really into coloring these days, and she's figured out how to get out the paper from her table.  It's everywhere in no time.  I kind of don't care because this means I can finish my coffee slowly.

8:40 am - Change a dirty diaper.  Is that what had been bothering her?  Now it's time for me to finally get ready for the day which only takes about 5 minutes.  It's a ponytail and no makeup day.  Sarah digs through the cabinets while I get ready.  So helpful!

9:00 am - Our Parent Educator comes over today for our monthly appointment.  Sarah has her annual assessment and gets high marks.  We're going to work on challenging her to learn how to zip and unzip things, twist lids on and off, and stack taller block towers.  The whole time Sarah seems off balance, isn't walking well, and is pretty frustrated.  When Gina starts packing up Sarah says Bye and can't wait for her to leave so she can sleep.

10:00 am - Tuck Sarah for a nap.  We're thinking about cutting back to one nap a day, but now isn't the time.  We need to finish the battle of the bottle first.

10:10 am - I put a new recipe in the crock pot, sun dried tomato chicken.  Hope it's a winner!  Anything that I can dump in and forget for a few hours typically has potential.

10:15 am - Check the computer and pet Mittens while she rests next to me.  She comes out once Sarah goes away. ;)  They like each other quite a bit, but Sarah can still be a bit much for Mittens to handle at times.

10:30 am - I'm attempting to read more and spend less time on my phone when I have down town, so I've checked out a couple of books from the city library.  For the Love has been good so far, and it's nice to get a little break in the middle of my day.

10:45 am - Sarah is awake and needs a diaper change and a snack.  I talk to Sarah's pediatrician's office, and they think Sarah has been sick long enough and needs to come in, so we'll come in at 2:15.  We get ready to head up to the church to help Robert clean out the student refrigerator and pantry.

11:15 am - We swing by the library to return a book and head to the church.  Seeing Robert makes Sarah perk up!  Robert holds Sarah while I organize the fridge and pantry.  We don't have enough time to finish everything, so I'll have to come back again to help organize the cabinets.

12:00 pm - We need to head home so we can eat lunch and so Robert can head to his weekly staff meeting.

12:10 pm - Oh my goodness, our trees are gorgeous!  This is our first fall in our neighborhood, and there are so many beautiful red maple trees.  We have the prettiest tree, in my humble opinion.

12:15 pm - I'm so hungry.  Sarah and I both have peanut butter sandwiches, and she enjoys mixing together her pumpkin and apple sauce and dipping her sandwich in it.  Gross.  She's so messy, so we might as well turn this into bath time.

12:45 pm - Another dirty diaper!  I'm just glad it happened before she was in the tub.  Sarah enjoys sticking foam letters to the bath tub.  Why does she insist on standing the whole time she's in the tub these days?

1:00 pm - Sarah needs a new outfit after her peanut buttery lunch.  She's majorly clingy and needs big time Mommy snuggles, so we are making the most of it and read several books.  The touch and feel books and the book that Neighs are big hits.

1:38 pm - We go outside to check the mail, and I realize that we don't have any because it's Columbus Day.  Darn.

1:40 pm - Leave for the doctor.  I know it's risky putting Sarah in the car right now because it's nap time, but this was the only time Dr. Toth could see her.

1:54 pm - Yep, Sarah fell asleep.  I carefully get her out of the car and manage to keep her asleep while we wait.  She's totally out of it when she wakes up and there are bright lights and a nurse talking to her.

2:15 pm - Sarah has a double ear infection.  I didn't see this coming.  She hasn't had a fever at all, and she's never had an ear infection before.  Since Sarah is already on medicine for her VUR we're going to wait and see if she develops a fever or starts tugging at her ears, and if she does Dr. Toth will prescribe something else.  (Spoiler alert...she gets a fever.)

2:40 pm - We're driving home, and I have my fingers crossed that we can both take naps when we get home.

2:55 pm - I tuck Sarah in feeling positive she's exhausted.  I quickly water the flowers, re-fill the bird feeder, and throw some clothes in the washing machine.

3:00 pm - Sarah is screaming and standing up, so I rock her and give her some Motrin.  I can tell she's so miserable.  She's groaning with her eyes closed, and I can't tell if she's actually awake or asleep.

3:48 pm - I finally give up on naps happening.  It's going to be a long afternoon.

4:00 pm - We FaceTime my mom for a bit.  She feels very sorry for Sarah and is going to take off work tomorrow to be with Sarah and me.  Hallelujah!

4:25 pm - I throw the clothes in the dryer, put cloth diapers in the washing machine, pick up a bit, and run the dry mop over the floors.

4:45 pm - Sarah sits in her high chair watching me chop carrots and cauliflower to go with dinner.  I'm so thankful we've finally reached the point where she's content watching me for a few minutes.

4:50 pm - Start the diapers on their second cycle.

5:00 pm - We're in the countdown for Robert to get home for the night and decide to play outside while we anxiously await his arrival home.  Sarah loves the crunchy leaves and playing with our pumpkins.  She takes the watering can from the garage and walks it around the house to the house.  She's been watching and observing us!

5:20 pm - Robert is home!!!

5:25 pm - Robert changes clothes, and we head out for a walk.  I'm so thankful for this cool fall weather.  Sarah's head starts drooping, and she's out hard.  Poor thing!

5:55 pm - We get home and tuck Sarah in for the night.  Please let her sleep through the night!  I switch the diapers over to their third and final cycle.

6:20 pm - We sit down for dinner outside on the deck, and Sarah immediately wakes up and starts crying.  No!!!  Thankfully, she fell back asleep after a couple of minutes.  And dinner was a hit!  Robert and I hang the diapers outside on the clothes line.

6:50 pm - I want to clean the garage this weekend, but Robert is feeling ambitious and wants to do it tonight so we can have the weekend free.  We had several boxes to put up in the attic and needed to rearrange stuff to be able to get in and out of our cars more easily.  We pump up the jams and get to work.

8:00 pm - I finally get to take a shower.  So refreshing!

8:10 pm - Time to veg out and watch Army Wives.  I never expected myself to love a Lifetime show, but I'm totally enjoying watching it on Netflix.

9:40 pm - I have to get up and go to bed.  I wash my face and brush my teeth, and then realize I never put new sheets on the bed.  This seems to happen every time.

10:00 pm - I squeeze in two more chapters of my book.

10:20 pm - So tired.  Must sleep.

7:05 am - Alarm goes off, and I realize Sarah slept through the night!
